I, Douglas Thomas Kirby, of 35, Cobden Road, Sevenoaks, in the County of Kent, Engineer, do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows:—
For the purpose of regulating the closeness of a shave it has been proposed to adjust the position of the guard plate relatively to the edge of the blade, in the case of a safety razor having a blade with a single cutting edge, the construction being such that when so adjusted the razor can only be used for a fine or a coarse shave as the case may be, further adjustment being necessary if a change is desired; and for the purpose of trimming the hair it has been proposed to mount a blade upon a haircomb. The object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of safety razor which may be used for the purpose of shaving and adjusted to give either a fine or a coarse shave and which may also be adjusted to enable the hair to be trimmed either close or coarse as desired without any further adjustment being necessary when it is desired to change from a close trim e.g. at the neck, to a coarse trim, e.g. at the crown of the head.
According to the present invention the guard of a razor provided with a double-edged blade is formed at one side with comb-like teeth of the usual relatively close spacing and at the other side with more widely spaced teeth and said guard is adjustably mounted relatively to the edges of the blade so that it may be caused to occupy positions, alternatively in which the razor is adapted for use at one side for shaving or adapted for use at both sides for hair trimming, at one side for fine trimming and at the other side for coarse trimming.
One form of razor constructed in accordance with this invention is of the general type of the well known Gillette razor and has as a head provided on one face centrally with a threaded pin and towards its ends with a pair of positioning pins, a double-edge blade of thin steel apertured centrally to give passage to said threaded pin and towards its ends to give passage to and co-act with the positioning pins, a correspondingly apertured guard plate having along one side comb-like teeth of the usual relatively close spacing and along the other side more widely spaced teeth, and a handle screw threaded internally at one end for engagement with said threaded pin and adapted to cause the blade to be clamped between the head and the guard plate.
In order to permit of the necessary adjustments the apertures in the guard plate are elongated in a direction at right angles to the cutting edges of the blade so that whilst the position of the blade is determined the guard may be adjusted to set the comblike teeth more or less forwardly relatively to the edges of the blade.
For instance the slotted apertures in the guard plate may be so formed that when those ends thereof nearer the finer teeth of the guard abut against the positioning pins that side of the razor at which said teeth are situated is adjusted for a very fine shave and when the other ends of the slotted apertures abut against said pins that side of the razor at which the finer teeth are situated is adapted for closely trimming the hair, e.g., at the neck, whilst the other side of the razor at which the more widely spaced teeth are situated is adapted for more coarsely trimming the hair e.g., at the crown, no further adjustment being necessary to make the change from a fine to a coarse trim, the change being effected merely by a reversal of the razor itself so as to bring the one side or the other into operation.
Obviously the construction permits of regulation not only of the closeness for shaving but also of the closeness or coarseness for hair trimming.
Preferably those comblike teeth which are the more narrowly spaced are bent slightly out of the general plane of the guard plate so that when the razor is adjusted for shaving said teeth are spaced slightly away from the edge of the blade, and when the razor is adjusted for hair trimming the edges of the blade touch the guard.
For the purpose of hair trimming the razor is manipulated in the usual manner as for shaving after the necessary adjustment has been made.

I, Douglas Thomas Kirby, of 35, Cobden Road, Sevenoaks, in the County of Kent, Engineer, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement:—
This invention relates to combined safety razors and hair trimming appliances, and in such devices it has been proposed to mount a double edged blade on a guard provided at one edge with comb-like teeth of even length and at the other edge with teeth of progressively increasing lengths the blade being adjustable longitudinally of the guard so as to vary the coarseness of the cut according to the lengths of the teeth projecting beyond the edge of the blade. It has also been proposed to adjust the position of the guard plate relatively to the edge of the blade in the case of a safety razor having a blade with a single cutting-edge, the construction being such that when so adjusted the razor can only be used for a fine or a coarse shave as the case may be, further adjustment being necessary if a change is desired. The object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of safety razor which may be used for the purpose of shaving and adjusted to give either a fine or a coarse shave and which may also be adjusted to enable the hair to be trimmed either close or coarse as desired without any further adjustment being necessary, when it is desired to change from a close trim, e.g., at the neck, to a coarse trim, e.g. at the crown of the head.
According to the present invention the guard of a razor provided with a double-edged blade is formed at one edge with comb-like teeth of the usual relatively close spacing and at the other edge with more widely spaced teeth and said guard is adjustable transversely of the edges of the blade so that it may be caused to occupy positions, alternatively in which the razor is adapted for use at one edge for shaving or adapted for use at both edges for hair trimming, at one side for fine trimming and at the other side for coarse trimming.
One form of razor constructed in accordance with this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein
As shewn the razor is of the general type of the well known Gillette razor and has a head

For the purpose of hair trimming the razor is manipulated in the usual manner as for shaving after the necessary adjustment has been made.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:—
1. A combined safety razor and hair trimming appliance wherein the guard plate is formed at one edge with comb-like teeth of the usual relatively close spacing and at the other edge with more widely spaced teeth and is adjustable transversely of the edges of the blade.
2. A combined safety razor and hair trimming appliance as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the guard plate is formed with elongated transverse apertures adapted to coact with the positioning pins on the head of the razor, substantially as set forth.
3. A combined safety razor and hair trimming appliance as claimed in Claim 1 or in Claim.2, wherein the more closely spaced teeth are bent slightly out of the general plane of the guard plate, substantially as set forth.
4. A combined safety razor and hair trimming appliance constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings.
