N° 20,687 A.D. 1908
Date of Application, 1st Oct., 1908—Accepted, 15th July, 1909 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION. Improvements in Safety Razors

I, Benjamin Samuel Bernstein, of Pearl Assurance Buildings, St. John Lane, Liverpool, in the County of Lancaster, Manufacturer, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement:—

This invention relates to safety razors of that type in which renewable thin sheet steel blades are carried in a holder having a safety edge; in such holders the blade requires to be held firmly in the correct position relatively to the safety edge, and the holding means must be such as will permit the easy insertion and withdrawal of the blade without damage to the edge thereof, and preferably without the use of loose detachable parts.

In known constructions the blade is secured in position on a frame by screws or screwed pins and nuts; or, in those constructions of safety razors where it is desired to strop the blade whilst it is still in the holder, the blade may be held in a spring clip mounted on a pivotal shaft geared to a roller rotated by the strop, in which case the blade may be held in operative position by a spring controlled movement of the guard or safety edge, the edges of the latter engaging with the ends of the blade.

The present invention relates to an improved construction of holder, in which the frame holding the blade, and the safety edge, are made integral, the said frame being pivotally attached to the handle or holder as to be capable of a limited spring controlled angular movement relatively thereto, so that, whilst in the one angular position of the frame the blade can be inserted or withdrawn with facility, it is held firmly and elastically in place in the normal angular position of the frame by a fixed clip on the holder.

In this construction, all loose parts are dispensed with, and an exceedingly simple and compact arrangement is provided.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of the frame and handle; in this view the blade is removed but its position is indicated by the dotted lines; Fig. 2 is an end view; and Fig. 3 is an end view in section on the line Z Z of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are views to a larger scale, Fig. 4 being in section on the line Z Z of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 in section on the line Y Y Fig. 1.

The frame A is of pressed sheet metal and is shaped as shown to form a curved safety edge 1; the frame is provided with slots 2, and has turned over edges or guides 3 under which the sides of the razor blade B slide; two lugs 4 are provided and the frame A is articulated to the ferrule C by a pin 5 which passes through the lugs 4 on the frame A and the lugs 6 on the ferrule C. A spring D is fitted which normally tends to turn the frame into the position shown in Fig. 5; when the frame is in this position the clipping edges 7 on the ferrule C are caused by the spring to press against the top edge of the blade, and, in conjunction with the side guides 3 and stop pieces 8 on the frame A, this clastic pressure holds the blade firmly and elastically in position in the frame.

Any suitable form of handle E may be attached to the ferrule C.

In order to insert or remove a blade, the frame is turned to the position shown in Fig. 4 and the blade inserted or withdrawn as shown.

The fact that the frame is elastically attached to the handle is found to be of advantage in the act of shaving.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:—

1. The improvement in safety razors with detachable blades which consists in so connecting to the handle the frame which carries the blade that it has a spring controlled angular movement relatively thereto, and in providing on the handle a clip which in the one angular position of the frame permits the introduction of the blade into the frame, and which in the normal angular position of the frame holds the blade in place by the transmitted spring pressure, substantially as described.

2. The improved safety razor, comprising the frame A provided with side guides and safety edge, the ferrule C to which the frame is pivoted, the fixed clips 7 on the ferrule, and the blade B which, when the frame is turned on its pivot towards the ferrule, can be inserted in the frame over the clips, and which is normally held in the frame by pressure against the fixed clips; substantially as described and illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5

Dated this 30th day of September 1908.
