COMPLETE SPECIFICATION. Safety Razor with Band-shaped Blade
373,372

I, Alfred Schmidt, of No. 14, Charlottenstrasse, Berlin-Lankwitz, Germany, a citizen of the United States of America, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement:—

This invention relates to a safety razor with band-shaped blade and it consists in arrangements for locking the portion of the blade to be used in operative position, arrangements for pressing the blade onto the comb by means of a cover plate and several other arrangements.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which :

Fig. 1 shows the apparatus ready for use in front elevation.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in vertical section of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the drum for the blade portion wound on a shaft.

Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the opposite drum with the winding shaft.

The apparatus consists of a tubular handle 1 and a rod 2, the reduced lower portion 3 of which terminates in a handle 4 which bears against the lower edge of the tube. The upper end of the rod has a bore 5 provided with female thread, in which the lower end of a rod 6 provided with male thread, is screwed, the upper end of this rod 6 carrying a curved cover plate 7 preferably made in one piece with the rod 6. In the upper end of the tube a hollow shank 8 is inserted in an enlargement of the bore of the handle 1, this shank having a joint 9, around which it can be folded over towards the rear. A curved comb plate 10 is mounted on the upper end of the shank 8. On the upper end of the tubular handle 1 blade drums 11 and 12 respectively are mounted one at each side of the hollow shank 8. A shaft 13 is rotatably mounted in the drum 11 (Fig. 3) on a conical member of which shaft one end of a long blade 14 is secured. The blade 14 is wound in a plurality of coils around the shaft 13, then passed over the comb 10 and fixed at the other end to a shaft 15 of the winding drum 12.

In the lower end of the tubular handle 1 a small pin 16 is inserted which limits the outward movement of the rod 2.

The shaft 13 in the blade drum 11 has a bore in each end, provided with female thread. In the bore in the front end of the shaft 13 a screw pin 17 is screwed, which carries a cap 18 on its outer end. A helical spring 20, wound around the screw pin 17, is inserted between the cap 18 and the front wall 19 of the drum 11. The rear wall 21 of the drum 11 is loosely inserted in the drum by means of side walls 22 and 23 and locked in position by a pin 24, with hand knob 25 screwed into the bore in the inner end of the shaft 13, provided with female thread, and by a pressure plate 26. The plate 26 has pins 28 which engage in corresponding holes in the rear wall 21.

In the rear wall 29 of the winding drum 12 the shaft 15 is inserted which has in its front end a central bore provided with female thread and on its rear end a hand knob 30. A screw pin 32 provided with a head 31 is screwed into the bore of the shaft 15. The corresponding end of the blade 14 is held in a slot in the shaft 15.

The blade 14 is tightly clamped in known manner between the cover plate 7 and the comb 10.

The operation is as follows :—

When the portion of the blade 14 lying on the comb 10 becomes blunt, the shaft 15 is turned in the winding drum 12 by means of the hand knob 30 so that a suitable length of blade is unwound from the shaft 13 and wound on the shaft 15 and a fresh portion of blade lies on the comb 10. When the band blade is worn out, this is replaced by a fresh blade in the following manner :—

The handle 4 is unscrewed from the tubular handle 1 so that the rod 2 unscrews from the rod 6 and liberates this latter together with the shank 8. The cover plate 7 is then lifted off the comb plate 10. The comb plate 10 is tilted slightly forward with the shank 8, so that the blade 14 lies free from the comb plate 10. The screw pins 17 and 24 of the blade drum 11 are loosened so that ‘the rear wall 21 can be removed. The screw pin 32 of the winding drum 12 is also unscrewed and the shaft 15 removed, so that the end of the blade 14 situated in the slit in the shaft 15 is free and the blade can be wound back onto the shaft 13 in the blade drum 11 and then removed from the blade drum with this shaft. A fresh blade is then inserted and all the parts of the apparatus are again locked.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is :—

1.—A safety razor with band-shaped blade, characterized in that the band-shaped blade is wound on a shaft rotatably journaled in a drum fixed on one side of the tubular handle and the other end of the blade guided over the comb plate, is fastened to a shaft, which is journaled in a winding drum, arranged on the other side of the tubular handle so that, when the portion of the blade situated on the comb plate is worn, a corresponding length of the blade can be wound on the shaft of the winding drum and unwound from the shaft of the blade drum so that a corresponding fresh portion of the blade is brought over the comb plate.

2.—A safety razor as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that in the tubular handle 1 carrying the blade drum 11 and the winding drum 13, a rod 2 reduced at its lower end and provided with a screwed on handle 4 is mounted, the upper end of said rod having a bore 5 with female screw thread, in which a rod 6 is screwed which carries a cover plate 7 designed to press the blade 14 on to the comb plate 10.

3.—A safety razor as claimed in claim 1 or 2, characterized in that in a widened portion of the bore of the tubular handle 1 a hollow shank 8, adapted to be tilted on a joint, is inserted, said shank carrying the comb plate on its upper end so that this plate, normally situated under the cover plate 7, can be swung out in order to liberate the blade.

4.—A safety razor as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the rear wall 21 of the blade drum 11 is removable and locked in its closing position by a screw pin provided with a knob screwed in a central internally screw-threaded bore in the rear end of the shaft 13 and presses a pressure plate 26 provided with pins 28 tightly against the rear wall 21, and that further a screw pin 17 with cap 18 and engaging in the bore with female thread in the front end of the shaft 13 is tightly screwed on, in compressing an interposed helical spring 20.

5.—A safety razor as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the shaft 15 provided with a knob 30 is removably inserted into the winding drum 12 through the rear wall 29 and has a slot for accommodating the corresponding end of the band blade 14, which shaft is secured in position in the drum by a screw pin 32 screwed into a bore provided with female screw thread in the front end of the shaft.
