COMPLETE SPECIFICATION. Improvements in or relating to Safety Razors
469,720

I, Walter Busch, a German citizen, of 64, Lindenbaumstrasse, Solingen, Germany, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement:—

This invention relates to improvements in safety razors of the type wherein the razor blade is clamped between the backing or cover plate and the guard plate in such a manner as to dispose the cutting edges of the blade at an inclination with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the handle.

In order to perform smooth shaving it is essential that apart from the most favourable cutting angle, a slanting or drawing cut can be performed when guiding the safety razor over the skin, contrary to the cut obtained from the usual type of safety razor having the blade arranged at right angles to the central axis of the handle.

It has previously been proposed to construct double-edged safety razors with twisted guard plate and cover plate between which the blade is clamped in such manner that its edges extend parallel to the longitudinal edges of the guard plate whereas the back of the cover plate is at right angles to the handle of the razor.

According to the present invention the outer surface of the backing or cover plate is provided with a raised portion which is symmetrical in cross-section and is so shaped that the vertex line thereof is disposed at right angles to the central vertical axis of the handle, and the base of the guard plate is disposed at an inclination with respect to the guard members in such manner as also to be disposed at right angles to the central vertical axis of the handle.

In order that the invention may be fully and clearly understood reference is made in the following description to the accompanying drawings in which a safety razor according to the present invention is shown by way of example.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the assembled safety razor,

Fig. 2 is a profile end elevation of the upper part of Fig. 3,

Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and

Fig. 4 an end elevation of Fig. 3 similar to Fig. 2 but taken from the opposite side.

Referring to the drawing 1 represents the backing or cover plate and 2 the guard plate between which the blade 3 is clamped in known manner by screwing home the handle 4. The edges 9 of the cover plate and the guard members 10 of the guard plate 2 are in an inclined parallel relationship so that the cutting edges of the blade clamped between said cover plate and guard plate are also disposed inclinedly in relation to the vertical central axis of the handle. Along the upper surface of the cover plate 1 extends a raised portion 6 gradually ascending from the cover plate face 5 in such manner, that the vertex line 11 of the cover plate is disposed at a right angle in relation to the central axis of the handle.

The lower side or outer surface 7 of the guard plate is disposed at an inclination in relation to the guard members 10, but parallel with the vertex line 11, so that also said lower side or outer surface is disposed at a right angle in relation to said central axis.

Thus the vertex line 11 of the cover plate 1 and the lower side or outer surface 7 of the guard plate 2 are disposed in parallel relationship to one another and at a right angle in relation to the central axis of the handle, whilst the clamping edges 9 of the cover plate 1 clamp the blade slantingly between said cover plate and guard plate in relation to the central axis of the handle, the guard members 10 being disposed correspondingly inclined.

Now, if a shaver uses a safety razor as described and shown, he will, both by habit and because of the rectangularly disposed vertex line 11 of the cover plate 1 move the safety razor over the skin at a right angle to the central axis of the handle, by which an inclined position of the cutting edges of the blade, and thus a drawing cut is obtained. The raised portion 6 further, gives a uniform clamping angle along the entire length of the cutting edges of the blade and thus a uniform and most favourable cutting angle is secured along the entire cutting edges. Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to ]be performed, I declare that what I claim is:—

1. Safety razor wherein the blade is clamped at an inclination with respect to the central vertical axis of the handle between backing or cover and guard plates characterised in that the outer surface of the cover plate is provided with a raised portion which is symmetrical in cross-section and is so shaped that the vertex line thereof is disposed at right angles to the central vertical axis of the handle, and the base of the guard plate is disposed at an inclination with respect to the guard members in such manner as also to be disposed at right angles to the central vertical axis of the handle.

2. The improved safety razor substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Dated this 8th day of February, 1937.
