United States Patent Office.

Frank White, of St. Louis, Missouri. Razor
1,291,318. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 14, 1919.
Application filed June 8, 1916. Serial No. 102,520

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Frank White, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Razor, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to razors, the principal object of my invention being to combine a razor either of the ordinary or safety type with an electric current generating means and controlling means for the current whereby a mild electric current of the faradic type may be delivered to the user of the razor.

I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of a safety razor combined with an electric generator, and an induction coil. Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the ordinary type of razor with which is combined an electric current generator and an induction coil.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the insulated handle of an ordinary safety razor, through which handle is formed a bore or passage way 2.

Leading from a suitable storage battery or source of electrical energy 3 is a conductor 4 the same being connected to the primary coil 5 of an induction coil. The opposite end of this primary coil or winding is connected to a vibrator 6 and leading therefrom to the storage battery is a conductor 7.

One end of a conductor 8 is connected to a metal part of the safety razor, said conductor leading through the bore 2 and being connected to the secondary winding 9 of the induction coil. Leading from the opposite end of this secondary winding is a conductor 10 which is connected to a suitable electrode or contact plate 11.

In the modified construction illustrated in Fig. 2 the conductor 8a from the secondary winding of the induction coil is connected to the blade 12 of an ordinary razor. The induced current passing through the secondary winding and its connections is controlled by the usual adjustable member 13, the same being provided with a suitable handle 14.

When my improved apparatus is in use the electrode 11 is applied to the arm or body of the user while the razor is used upon the face in the usual manner. The person using the razor regulates the current by manipulating the member 13 and when the blade of the razor makes contact with the person's face a mild current of the faradic type is delivered to the user. This faradic current has the effect of raising the hairs on the skin so that the ends thereof may be readily engaged by the edge of the razor blade and likewise said current has the effect of maintaining the metal fibers on the edge of the razor in proper alinement, or in other words, said current acts on said metal fibers the same as when the razor is stropped.

The faradic current is widely employed as a means of curing or preventing certain diseases, and is altogether different from the galvanic current in action. It shows less variation between the effect of poles because it is an alternating current and the poles change too quickly for chemical results to be manifested. The feature which gives this current its true value is its ability to cause muscular contractions with each make or break of the current. The result of these contractions is the exercise of the muscular tissues and consequent improvement in all the various bodily processes.

There is an increased oxidation of the tissues and an increased elimination of the poisons of waste products, therefore the faradic current may be termed a massage current by reason of the fact that it increases cellular activity and is indicated in all conditions where increased nutrition, either locally or generally is desired. Thus by the use of a device of my improved construction the alinement of the metal fibers in the edge of the razor is maintained and at the same time a mild and helpful electric current is delivered to the user of the razor. Furthermore, the operation of shaving is made comparatively easy by reason of the fact that the current delivered to the skin along the edge of the razor has the effect of raising the ends of the hairs so that they may be readily engaged by the edge of the blade.

I claim:

In a device of the class described, the combination with a razor, of a source of electrical energy, an induction coil, a connection from the primary coil of said induction coil to said battery, a vibrator in said connection, a connection from the secondary coil of the induction coil to the razor, an electrode and an electrical connection from said electrode to the secondary coil of said induction coil.

In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature this 3d day of June, 1916.

Frank White.
