United States Patent Office.

Jacob B. Garfunkle, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Attachment for Razors Application filed May 3, 1927.Serial No. 188,585.

My invention relates more particularly to reflecting and illuminating attachments used in connection with safety razors when shaving.

The objects of my invention are to provide a simple, convenient, efficient and economical attachment for razors, which is adapted to illuminate the surface of the face being shaved, thereby eliminating the usual strain upon the eyes.

My invention consists in providing an attachment comprising a detachable frame adapted to support a mirror or reflecting surface preferably pivotally mounted whereby light is reflected upon the surface being shaved, and also supporting thereabove an electric light for the purpose of intensifying the light reflection from the mirror upon the surface being shaved.

My invention also consists in the peculiar construction, combination, location and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and claimed.

In the drawings:

Fig. 1 is an isometric view of a safety razor having my attachment mounted thereon in position ready for use;

Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof partly in elevation;

Fig. 3 is an isometric view of the detachable supporting frame;

Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the reflector;

Fig. 5 is a section thereof;

Fig. 6 is a section of the frame and razor on the line 6—6 of Fig. 2; and

Fig. 7 is a front view of a person in the act of shaving with a safety razor having my attachment thereon, said person looking into a mirror before him where the light from the attachment is increased and intensified by the reflector and lamp, and the intensifying light from the reflector and lamp eliminates his turning of the head to an acute angle, thereby minimizing the eye strain.

In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated, the detachable supporting frame 1 is preferably formed of a flat plate or bar of rectangular construction having its lower cross bar 2 provided with orifices 3, 4 and 5, with bearing perforations 6 near the top of its upright bars 7 and with spaced apart vertical supporting lugs 8 at the inner ends of inturned bars 9, said lugs 8 having threaded sockets or holes 10 therein.

The mirror 11 is preferably concavo-convex and is provided with pintles 12 adapted to be inserted and pivotally bear in perforations 6 of frame 1, the mirror being placed on the concave surface thereof, and the electric bulb 13, of usual construction, is mounted in socket 14, secured by screws extending therein through holes 10 of lugs 8. A suitable electric conductor 15 is attached to the socket and may be connected to any suitable electric source.

I have illustrated my attachment as applied to the well-known Gillette type of safety razor which is provided with handle 16 having a screw-threaded socket 17 in its reduced end.

In order to apply my attachment thereto, simply unscrew the threaded stem 18 of clamping member 19, thereby permitting the removal of the razor head comprising the clamping member 20, razor blade 21 and clamping member 19, whereupon my attachment is applied in position on the upper or reduced end of handle 16, and threaded stem 18 is inserted through orifice 3 and screwed into the screw-threaded socket 17, as shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the razor is ready for use with my attachment thereon.

When using my invention upon a Gillette razor, the locating pins 4a and 5a pass through orifices 4 and 5, respectively, thereby serving to hold the frame from turning upon threaded stem 18. However, said attachment may be applied to other forms of razors in which said pins are omitted, thus my attachment, as illustrated, is capable of universal application to safety razors now on the market.

The reflecting surface of the mirror 11 is on the concave side thereof and the free end of said mirror engages the convex surface of razor clamping member 19, thereby holding it in the desired position for reflecting and intensifying the light upon the surface being shaved.

It will thus be seen that the reflection of the light upon the surface being shaved and also the intensifying of said light by the electric lamp serves to minimize the strain of the eyes in the effort to prevent accident in the delicate operation of shaving.

The electric bulb may be of small voltage, of, say, one or two candle power and a suitable battery may be used or, if desired, a transformer may be inserted between the usual source of electric supply and the bulb.

Thus, with a safety razor provided with my attachment the reflector will reflect the rays of light upon the surface being shaved and the electric light bulb, when used in connection therewith, will intensify said light by casting part of its rays directly against the reflector, which will, in turn, be thrown upon the surface being shaved, so that a strong, clear light will, at all times, be supplied to the shaver under varying conditions, whether his head is at an angle while shaving or whether the head is in the usual frontal position.

It will be understood that my invention is capable of modification without departure from the scope or spirit thereof as defined in the claims, and that while it is specially adapted and intended for use in connection with safety razors, as set forth, I desire it to be understood that it may also be applied and used in connection with the old-time straight razors, and that when so used it falls within the terms of my invention as defined in the claims.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An attachment for a razor comprising a rectangular frame having an orifice therein, a reflector pivotally mounted in said frame, a lamp secured to said frame, in combination with a safety razor adapted to detachably receive said frame between the blade and clamping members on one side and the handle on the other side whereby the free end of the pivoted reflector will engage the convex surface of the outer razor clamp.

2. An attachment for a razor comprising a rectangular frame provided with a base having an orifice centrally disposed therethrough and having inclined uprights provided with inwardly extending parts each having a lug thereon, a reflector having pintles thereon adapted to be mounted and supported by said uprights, and an electric lamp having its socket secured to and between said lugs, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.

3. An attachment for a razor comprising a frame provided with a base having a plurality of orifices therethrough and having a reflecting surface and lamp thereon, in combination with a razor having a threaded stem and locating pins adapted to enter said orifices and to be detachably held between the end of the razor handle and the razor head.

4. An attachment for a safety razor having a razor head and handle, said attachment comprising a frame provided with a base detachably mounted between the razor head and handle, said frame extending upwardly away from said handle beyond the razor head, and a reflector attached to said frame whereby light is continually reflected downwardly upon the surface being shaved.

5. An attachment for a safety razor having a razor head and handle, said attachment comprising a frame attached between said razor head and handle and extending upwardly around said head, a reflector attached to said frame, and an electric lamp mounted on said frame above said reflector and razor head and adapted to continually throw light rays therefrom onto said reflector and onto the surface being shaved.

6. An attachment for a safety razor having a razor head and handle, said attachment comprising a frame detachably mounted adjacent the razor head and in fixed relation thereto, a concave reflector pivotally mounted within said frame and adapted to swing into engagement with the convex surface of the razor head, and a lamp mounted on said frame above said reflector and above the convex surface of said head whereby direct and reflected rays of light are continually thrown upon the surface being shaved.

7. An attachment for a razor comprising a frame, a reflector pivotally mounted in said frame, a lamp secured to said frame, in combination with a safety razor adapted to detachably receive said frame between the blade and clamping members on one side and the handle on the other side whereby the free end of the pivoted reflector will engage the convex surface of the outer razor clamp.
