United States Patent Office

1,931,856 Combined Safety Razor and Sharpening Mechanism Louis V. Arsonson, Newark, N. J., assignor to Art Metal Works, Inc., a corporation of New Jersey Application January 31, 1931. Serial No. 512,614. 9 Claims. (Cl. 30—12)

This invention relates to a combined safety razor and sharpening mechanism.

Among the objects of this invention is the provision of a safety razor including a sharpening device, together with means providing convenient means for turning of the blade, if a double edged blade is used, to present either of its edges to the sharpening device or to the shaving position without removing the blade from its clamping means.

The invention consists in such novel features, arrangements and combinations of parts, as may be shown, described and claimed in connection with the embodiments of the invention herein disclosed by way of example only.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, in which

Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal section of a combined safety razor and sharpening means showing the blade in position to be turned;

Fig. 2 is a section similar to that in Fig.1 showing one edge of the blade in shaving position and the other edge in sharpening position;

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the head of the razor when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2;

Fig. 4 is a top view of the guard and sharpening device;

Fig. 5 is a top view of Figs. 1 and 2;

Fig. 6 shows a modification; and

Fig. 7 shows still another modification.

The invention shown in Figs, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 includes a hollow handle 10 to which a supporting member 11 is suitably secured or formed integral therewith. Formed on one side of the supporting member 11 is a guard 12 which may be constructed as shown, and may be provided with two spacing lugs for spacing the razor blade 14 from the guard 12 so as to provide an opening between the blade and the guard through which lather and hair cuttings may pass to facilitate the cutting operation of the blade.

The blade 14 may rest on an inner seat or clamping member or plate 15 which is connected by means of a flexible connection 16 with a stem 17 extending through the hollow handle 10, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. This stem 17 may be held against rotation in the handle 10 by means of a pin 18 operating in a slot in the handle, as shown.

The clamping member 15, as shown in Fig. 3, carries a pair of aligning pins 20 which when the blade 14 is moved toward operating position engage in holes in the supporting member 11 to align the edges of the blade with respect to the guard 12 and the sharpening means 21 which, as shown in Fig. 1, may be in the form of a roller constructed of any suitable material such as glass, chromium plated metallic cylinders, or any cylinders having glazed or enameled surfaces or cylinders of any other suitable material. The sharpening roller is supported on ears 22 preferably integral with the supporting member 11. The roller may be rotated by rolling the same over the hand of the user or otherwise as desired.

For the purpose of drawing and retaining the blade in operative position, a spring 25 is provided bearing at one end against a shoulder within the handle 10 and at its other end against the end of a cap 26 having a screw connection with the stem 17. The necessary tension of the spring 25 may be obtained by turning the cap 26 on the stem 17 until its movement is limited by a stud 27 threaded in the closed end of the cap, as shown. Preferably, this adjustment is made at the factory but if any adjustment is needed later on it may readily be effected by a change in the position of the stud 27.

The aligning pins 20 are preferably formed with enlarged aligning-portions 30 which fit in and extend through a slot in the razor blade and are adapted to be engaged by an outer clamping member or plate 31, after this has been placed in position under the heads 32 of the aligned pins 20. The clamping plate 31 is provided with a gripping surface 33 to facilitate the removal of the plate from, or its connection with, the heads of the aligning pins 20. The construction is such that when the removable clamping plate is in position, the razor blade 14 will be under the required tension.

When the edge of the blade in shaving position becomes dull the blade may be moved from the operative position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the aligning pins are disengaged from the supporting member 11 and the clamping plates and the razor blade are free to be turned to present the other or sharpened edge into shaving position and to present the dull edge into position to be sharpened by the roller 21.

As shown in Fig. 7, the portion corresponding to the handle 10, shown at 10a, may be made short as well as the stem 17a, while the cap 26a may be made relatively long and may constitute the handle proper. By means of this construction it is possible to disconnect the handle from the razor for convenience in packing.

The operation of the stems 17 and 17a is facilitated by means of engaging flanges on the handles 10 and 10a and the caps 26 and 26a.

In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the inner clamping member or plate 15b is supported on a hollow stem 17b and the outer clamping member or plate 31b is supported on a stem 35 which extends through the stem 17b, the stems being moved relatively longitudinally to move the clamping plates 15b and 31b to clamp or free the razor blade, by means of a cap 26b which bears against a spring 25b which in turn, bears against a shoulder within the handle 10b.

By means of this construction the razor blade may be removed from the razor by removal of the cap 26b which permits the clamping plate 31b to be removed. By pressing on the cap 26b the razor blade may be moved into the position shown in Fig. 1 in connection with the operation of the modification shown in Fig. 2, and by turning the cap 26b the blade may be rotated to present its dull edge to the sharpening device and its sharp edge to the guard as may be readily understood.

While the invention has been described with respect to certain particular preferred examples which give satisfactory results, it will be understood by those skilled in the art, after understanding the invention, that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and it is intended, therefore, in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications.
