To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Joseph B. Sultzer, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mustache-Curlers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a novel device for curling mustaches; and it consists of a plate having a recess, combined with a brush, or, what I consider its equivalent, a comb capable of turning upon or adjacent to one face of the plate, in such manner that when the end of the mustache is passed through the recess of the plate and the brush is turned the desired curl is imparted to the mustache.

The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents two of the plates applied to a mustache, the rotary brushes being omitted, showing one end of the mustache after being curled by the brush and the other end before it is curled. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device complete; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the plate; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the brush, and Fig. 5 a sectional view of the brush.

In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, where—

The number 1 indicates a circular flat plate having at one edge a suitable handle, 2, and in its opposite edge provided with a recess, 3, which, as here shown, is substantially V-shaped, with the edges 4 diverging outwardly. To the center of the plate is attached a pivot-pin, 5, upon which is adapted to turn or rotate a brush, which, as here shown, is composed of a head, 6, having a central attached sleeve, 7, adapted to slip over and freely turn on the pivot-pin 5. The brush is provided with any suitable means whereby it may be turned; but a simple attached knob or handle, 8, will satisfactorily serve this purpose.

In practice the plate is placed against the face, with the mustache extending through the recess 3 and resting upon the outer face of the plate, and the brush is then placed on the pivot-pin and rotated or turned until the desired curl is provided, this being accomplished by the circular movement of the brush or comb, imparting a circular movement to the mustache, so that the end thereof is curved around, as shown in Fig. 1. The acting face of the brush may be of bristles and of any desired form, and other means than that described and shown may be provided for journaling the brush on the plate. The form of the recess may also be varied.

The invention provides a simple and efficient device for curling mustaches in an even and uniform manner without the necessity of manipulating the mustache with the fingers.

The plate and brush-head may be made of any suitable material—such as metal, ivory, celluloid, gutta-percha, horn, or wood—and it may be of any suitable form.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is—

1. A device for curling mustaches, consisting of a recessed plate and a rotary brush, substantially as described.

2. The combination, in a mustache-curler, of a plate having a recess and a handle and a rotary brush, substantially as described.

3. The combination, in a mustache-curler, of a recessed plate having a pivot-pin with a brush journaled on the pin, substantially as described.

4. The combination, in a mustache-curler, of a recessed plate with a brush detachably journaled thereon, substantially as described.
