United States Patent Office.
Joseph Turner, of Worcester, Massachusetts, assignor to J. R. Torrey Razor Company, of same place.
Safety-Razor
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,506, dated September 27, 1887.
Application filed July 5, 1887. Serial No. 243,430. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Joseph Turner, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of razors known as “safety-razors,” the object being to provide a razor of this kind with a convenient handle from which the guard-plate and blade-holder may be quickly detached to reverse the handle or to pack the device in a small box when not in use, and also to furnish a blade-holder of such construction that the blade may be conveniently removed or inserted, and will be securely retained in place when in the holder.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of my invention with the handle attached to the guard-plate and holder. Fig. 2 is a similar view, with the handle detached, showing how the parts may be packed. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are front, back, and end views, respectively, of the guard-plate and blade-holder with the handle detached in Figs. 4 and 5. Fig. 6 is a top view of a modification.
A denotes the guard-plate having the guard-teeth a and holding-lips a′ of usual form, said lips embracing the ends of the blade B to retain the latter in the guard-plate, which thus also serves as a holder for the said blade. To facilitate the insertion and removal of the blade, the plate A is cut away at its top to form a finger or thumb recess, c; and to prevent the blade, when in use, from being forced backward out of the holding-lips a, I prefer to use the pivoted spring-latches c′, which bear on the top or back of the blade, said latches being pivoted to the back of the plate A, and being thus adapted to be turned outward past the ends of the blade, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 6, when the blade is to be removed or inserted.
D is the handle, consisting of two spring-arms provided with inwardly-turned holding-lips d, which are adapted to pass through slot a4 in the ears a2 of the plate A to fasten the handle to the said plate. The handle is made of spring metal, so that when the lips d are engaged with the ears a2 the resilience of the handle will prevent its disengagement, and as the lips d are turned inward the pressure of the thumb and finger of the user on the outer sides of the two arms of the handle will the more firmly press the said lips into their slots, and thus securely prevent the said lips from being disengaged from the said ears when in use. To disengage the handle from the guard plate and holder when the device is to be packed up, it is only necessary to spring the arms of the handle outward to remove the lips d from the slots in the ears a2.
One arm of the handle D is preferably made longer than the other and provided with an outwardly-curved tail-piece, d′ to prevent the fingers of the user from slipping off, and as the blade-holder A may be readily detached from the handle the latter can, with but little trouble to the user, be conveniently reversed, so that the razor may be held in either hand at pleasure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent—
1. The combination, with the guard-plate and blade-holder A, having the slotted ears a2, of the handle having two spring-arms provided with inwardly-turned lips, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the guard-plate and blade-holder A, having the slotted ears a2 of the handle having two spring-arms provided with inwardly-turned lips, one of the said arms having an outwardly-curved tailpiece, substantially as set forth.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a guard-plate and blade-holder for safety-razors, provided with backwardly-turned ears having slots said guard-plate and blade-holder having also spring-latches which are pivoted to its back, and a handle with spring-arms, provided with inwardly-turned lips to engage the said slots, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Joseph Turner.
