Samuel L. Bligh, of Custard's, Pennsylvania. Shaving Device
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,065, dated March 27, 1900. Application filed August 31, 1899. Serial No. 729,083. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Samuel L. Bligh, a citizen of the United States, residing at Custard's, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has for its object to provide a device for shaving by abrasion, to take the place of the usual razor or other like cutting implement; and it consists, substantially, in a roller having an abrading-surface and adapted for connecting with a suitable driving power, whereby the roller may have imparted thereto a rotary motion, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing my improved shaving device in use; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the shaving device on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is across-section through one end of the roller.

In the accompanying, drawings, A represents the roller of wood or other suitable material and of any desirable diameter and length found best adapted to the purpose. The periphery of the roller has an abrading-surface, preferably of emery, which surface may be formed on the roller, or, if desired, a strip of emery paper or cloth of suitable size, as shown at B, may be secured around the roller. Where the roller is not composed of an abrading material and the strip B of emery paper or cloth is used, the same is secured in place by inserting the meeting edges thereof in a longitudinal groove or kerf formed in the periphery of the roller, as shown at a, and afterward drawing a cord or wire b through this groove or kerf and between the edges of the emery cloth or paper, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This cord or wire will hold the emery cloth or paper in place upon the roller and admit of the cloth or paper being removed when worn and replaced by a new strip, the cord or wire being pulled out from between the meeting edges of the emery paper or cloth when the latter is to be removed.

The roller A has a central groove c, over which passes a driving belt or cord d, which may in turn connect with any suitable driving-wheel operated by electricity, foot, or other power, as found most desirable.

In order to illustrate the application of the driving power to the belt or cord, I have shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings the usual driving-wheel C of a sewing-machine, to which said belt or cord is connected, the power being applied by the usual foot-pedals of the machine by the user of the shaving device, a guide-loop e, through which the belt or cord d passes, holding the latter in engagement with the driving-wheel C.

The roller A is journaled in a wire or other frame D, of any suitable form and construction, said frame having a suitable handle E, by which it may be held by the operator. The frame or handle is provided with a looped guide F on line with and directly over the central groove of the roller, and through this looped guide passes the driving belt or cord d. The looped guide F retains the belt or cord in engagement with the central groove of the roller and prevents any lateral displacement thereof. The abrading-surface of the roller is held in contact with the face of the user and the roller given a continuous rotary motion at a high rate of speed and the roller moved over the face as the beard is worn away, the device to be used on a perfectly dry face, no soap or water being used.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is—

1. A shaving device consisting of a roller having an abrading-surface and a central guide-groove, a frame to which the roller is journaled, a guide-loop extending over and on line with the guide-groove, and a suitable handle connected to the frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A shaving device consisting of a roller having a longitudinal groove or kerf adapted for the reception of the edges of a strip of paper or cloth having an abrading-surface to hold the same in place over the roller, said roller having a central groove, a suitable frame with handle to which the roller is journaled, and a guide-loop extending over the roller and on line with the central groove, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.

Samuel L. Bligh.
