To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, James J. Fetzer, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbiana, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to razors of the “safety” type, and has for its object the production of an implement which is at once most convenient and effective in its operation, durable and extremely simple in its construction, and as a consequence of the latter characteristic easily cleaned and kept in order.

The invention will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved razor in its entirety. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of the device. Fig. 3 is also an enlarged elevation the reverse of Fig.2. Fig. 4 is a vertical central section of the tool illustrated by the preceding figures. Fig. 5 is a view corresponding with Fig. 4, including a modified form of guard-comb: and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the razor-blade detached.

Reference being had to the drawings and letters thereon, A indicates the handle of my improved razor, which may be of any approved shape, but for economy and simplicity of construction is preferably straight, as shown, with a shoulder or fixed nut B at its operative end and a longitudinal slot a in its opposite end for the reception at times of razor-blades during the process of honing or stropping.

C indicates a one-piece guard-plate in screw-threaded detachable connection with the shouldered or enlarged end of handle A and provided at its sides with folded or overlapping blade-retaining guides b b, most clearly shown by Fig. 2. The space between side guides b b is cut out, as shown at c, Fig. 3, the better to afford clearance for shavings of the beard and to assist in the operation of cleansing the parts after use, while below such clearance-space c of the one-piece guard is an appropriate comb D, the functions whereof are similar to those of all razors of this type; but it should be understoood that I do not limit myself to the curvature of teeth or form of comb herein shown, since this feature may be varied indefinitely without departing from the spirit of my invention.

E indicates the razor-blade adapted to fit snugly between guides b b of guard C and provided with lateral ears d d for engagement with said guides to limit the downward movement of the blade. When thus positioned, any movement of blade E in the opposite or upward direction is resisted by engagement at its central upper edge with the protruding threaded end e of handle A, and as a final means of firmly securing the handle, guard, and blade together in operative position a jam-nut F is provided. This single nut F, as best shown by Figs. 4, 5, when thus applied to the threaded end e of handle A serves to speedily and effectively secure and bind blade E to guard C and the latter to handle A in a manner which always insures accuracy of adjustment, and consequently safety to the user.

The use of this type of razors is too well understood to require description here, and it is thought the method of assembling has been hereinbefore sufficiently set forth.

Having therefore described my invention in its preferred form of embodiment, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is—

In a safety-razor the combination with a blade, of a guard having blade-retaining guides to prevent lateral displacement of the blade, a clearance-space in said guard between said guides, a supporting-handle threaded through said guard above the blade, and a jam-nut for securing said blade, guard and handle together in adjusted position, substantially as described.
