United States Patent Office.

Walter H. G. King, of Denver, Colorado. Safety-Razor.
No. 854,506. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 21, 1907.
Application filed January 24, 1907. Serial No. 353,819

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Walter H. G. King, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Safety-Razor, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in safety razors, and the objects of my inventoin are: first, to provide a safety razor provided with a handle that can be adjusted to stand at any desired angle. Second, to provide a safety razor having a spring-controlled handle that can be quickly adjusted to stand at any desired angle to the body of the razor. And third, to provide a safety razor that is pivotally attached to its handle, and that can be tilted and adjustably set to stand at any desired angle to the handle the user may desire while shaving with it. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which

Figure 1, is a perspective view of a safety razor embodying my preferred form of adjustable handle. Fig. 2 is a transverse, sectional view taken centrally through the blade supporting body, showing the handle pivoted thereto, the razor blade and retaining means, being omitted.

Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1, in general, designates the body of the safety razor, and 2 designates the handle. The body portion is generally made of metal, preferably of a thin sheet metal, although of any suitable material. The body portion is composed of the cutter holder 3 which is adapted to support a razor blade through the medium of the side springs 3A and the clip 3B. This razor blade and the means by which it is supported by the razor body do not however, form a part of my present invention, as they are in public use. The body portion also is provided with a housing 4, which is curved downwardly from the top of the cutter holder 3, to form a support for the handle.

Through the housing portion 4, adjacent to its end, I form a slot 5, which in length extends throughout the greater portion of the width of the housing. The lower edge of this slot is formed into a plurality of notches 6, preferably arranged in successive order close together across the length of the slot. The upper edge of this slot preferably comprises an introverted tongue portion 7, which is curved under the edge of the slot and extends up under the housing toward the top of the cutter holding portion of the body of the razor, and is arranged and adapted to form a spring, and this spring tongue portion may be formed integral with the housing back of the body of the razor when the housing is made of a suitable springing metal. It may also be made separate from the housing and be made of any suitable spring metal, and be secured to the housing.

To the inside of the upper portion of the housing above the slot and adjacent to, the upper end of the cutter holding portion of the razor, I pivotally secure by a pin or screw or rivet 8, one end of the handle 2, the opposite end of which extends loosely through the slot in the housing far enough to form a hand grasping handle for holding and guiding the body of the razor.

The under side of the handle is provided with a slightly depending lug portion 9, which is adapted to fit into the notches 6, of the lower edge of the slot. The spring tongue 7, is adapted to bear against the upper surface of the handle 2, with sufficient resilient pressure to normally hold the lug 9 of the handle in engagement with the notches formed in the lower edge of the slot.

The handle is free to swing on its pivotal center from one end of the slot in the housing to its opposite end, but is held under constant resilient tension against the lower edge of the slot, and with its depending lug in engagement with some one notch of the lower edge of the slot, and the spring tongue is arranged and adapted to exert just enough frictional resilient tension on the handle to hold it whenever it is set against accidental movement under such pulling or drawing strains as the razor is subject to in shaving.

The operation is as follows: The safety razor is held by its handle in the hand of a man shaving, the same as if the handle were rigidly secured to the body of the razor, and the user cants or swings the body of the razor on the pivotal pin of the handle to stand at any desired angle to the handle, or changes it to stand at various angles to the handle, best adapted to cause the cutting blade of the razor to fit most naturally against the profile of the face and chin and neck of the user, thereby very greatly facilitating the comfort and ease of shaving.

My invention is simple, thoroughly practical, and permits any angular adjustment required to be very quickly made.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a safety razor, the combination of a razor blade supporting body, a slot in said body, a handle extending through said slot and pivotally secured at its end to said body, a notched surface on said body, means connected with said handle for engaging said notched surface, and a spring connected to said razor body for holding said handle in frictional engagement with said notched surface.

2. In a safety razor, the combination of the razor blade, the supporting body provided with a housing portion, a slot in said housing, with a handle projecting through said slot and pivotally connected at its inner end to said housing, a row of notches along the lower edge of said slot in which said handle is adapted to fit, and a tongue portion formed on the upper lip-of said slot, and arranged to bear resiliently against said handle, and hold it by a resilient frictional pressure in said notches.

3. In a safety razor, the combination of the razor body provided with a slot, the handle pivotally secured in said razor body and projecting through said slot, a notched surface on said razor body adapted to receive said handle, and means for releasably and adjustably securing said handle at different angular or tilted positions to said razor body.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

Walter H. G. King.
