To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, James F. Bailey, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Valdosta, in the county of Lowndes and State of Georgia, have invented an Improvement in Razors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in razors, and especially in what are commonly known as safety razors; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the razor open for use. Fig. 2 is an edge view showing the body portion folded within the slotted handle. Fig. 3 is a detail face view partly broken away of the main section of the body portion of the razor. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the blades. Fig. 5 is a face view of one of the blades. Fig. 6 is a detail cross section on about line 6—6 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a part of the body portion of the razor showing the slot in the outer end thereof for the reception of the blade.

In carrying out the invention, I provide what for convenience of reference I term the body portion A, which carries the blade, and this body portion has a projecting tongue or handle A′, which may be for convenience pivoted at A2 within a slotted handle B so the razor may be folded as shown in Fig. 2, and may be opened as shown in Fig. 1, and when in the latter adjustment may be used similar to an ordinary razor. It will be understood, however, that I do not desire to be limited to the use of the slotted handle B, as this may be omitted if desired and the operator may simply grasp the body portion in using the razor, This body portion is slotted longitudinally from one end at a, and is provided within said slot and at the base thereof with a projecting rib C which extends in the direction of length of the slot a and is arranged about midway between the side edges of the main section D of the body portion A, and is provided with a lateral projection or projections C′ which preferably are arranged opposite each other and are arranged to interlock with the tongues E′ of the blade E when the latter is adjusted into the body A in the use of the invention as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6 of the drawing. The blade E has a finger hold e at its outer end which is exposed when the blade is inserted as shown in Fig. 1, so it may be readily grasped and withdrawn from the body portion A, and the tongues or wings E′ at the inner end of the blade are spaced apart to fit on opposite sides of the rib C and are notched in their inner edges at e′ to receive the projections C′, the wings E′ of the blade springing apart under pressure and thus adjusting into and out of engagement with the projections C′ in inserting and removing the blade. It will be noticed the blade can thus be readily applied and removed, and having the double edges and being sharpened on both sides can be reversed when desired.

The main section D of the body portion has its opposite edges formed with the guards d as is usual in safety razors, and the cover plate F of the body portion is fitted to the main section and is secured thereto by screws, rivets, or the like, applied at f at the base of the plate F and at f′ to the rib C, thus securing the cover plate in place so it can be readily removed when desired. This cover plate F, as shown in Fig. 1, and the main section D, as shown in Fig. 3, are notched in their outer edges at f2 and d2, to permit the operator to readily grasp the finger hold e of the blade.

The blade will in practice be made very thin and sharp at both edges, and can be used either in the right or left hand, and can be reversed when desired, and the blade when pushed into the body portion will interlock, having the spring wings or tongues which may spread laterally when adjusting into and out of engagement with the projecting portion of the body as before described.

In practice, the razor may be made of aluminium, or other suitable metal, and be made very thin, light and non-corrosive, and finished by plating or otherwise in any suitable manner.

I claim:

1. The combination in a safety razor, of the body portion having a projecting tongue or handle, and composed of a main section having on its inner face a rib arranged midway between the sides of the said main section and having on its opposite sides the lateral projections, the edges of the main section being formed with guards, the cover plate applied to said main section over the longitudinal rib thereof, and spaced thereby apart from the main section forming a longitudinal slot in the main section for the reception of a blade, and the blade movable longitudinally in said slot and having its opposite edges sharpened and provided at its inner end with spaced apart tongues or wings extending on opposite sides of the rib of the main section and notched in their inner edges for interlocking engagement with the lateral projections of the said rib, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A razor comprising a body portion slotted from one end for the reception of a blade, and a blade movable longitudinally in said slot and incased therein when adjusted to position for use and springing at its inner end into and out of interlocking engagement with the body portion at the base of the end slot, substantially as set forth.

3. A razor comprising a body portion having a longitudinal slot from one end, and a rib extending longitudinally above said slot at the base thereof, and a blade fitting longitudinally in said slot and having its inner end slotted forming spaced apart tongues or wings extending on opposite sides of the said rib and interlocking therewith, substantially as set forth.

4. A razor comprising a body portion slotted longitudinally from one end and having within said slot at the base thereof a longitudinally extending rib, and a blade fitting in said slot and having at its inner end spaced apart tongues or wings extending on opposite sides of the said rib of the body portion, substantially as set forth.

5. A razor comprising a body portion having a main section, a cover section applied thereto and spaced apart therefrom forming a slot for the reception of a blade, and a rib crossing said slot at the base thereof, and a blade fitting between said main section and body portion, and having at its inner end tongues or wings extending on opposite sides of the said rib, substantially as set forth.

6. A razor comprising a body portion having a slot extending longitudinally from its outer end, and a blade movable longitudinally in said slot into and out of interlocking engagement with the body portion at the base of the slot and having its outer end projecting beyond the body portion forming a hand hold by which the blade may be removed, the blade being incased when adjusted for use in the body portion and the latter forming a safety guard for the blade when the blade is so adjusted substantially as set forth.

7. A razor comprising a body portion provided with a slot leading from one end and open at the opposite sites of the body and a blade movable in the direction of its length longitudinally into and out of said slot in the body portion, the latter forming a casing for the blade when the latter is adjusted to position for use and having edge guards substantially as set forth.

8. A safety razor comprising a body portion slotted longitudinally from one end and provided with the edge guards, a blade movable longitudinally in said slot, and means at the inner end or base of the slot for interlocking engagement with the blade when the latter is pushed into the slot in position for use, substantially as set forth.
