Robert Campbell, of New York, N. Y. Hair-Cutting Device.
No. 885,584. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 21, 1908.
Application filed September 27, 1907. Serial No. 394,880

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Robert Campbell, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved device for use by barbers and cutters for cutting hair and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved device of this character which comprises a comb a blade for cutting the hair and means to secure the blade on one side of the comb for coöperation therewith in cutting the hair as the comb is used.

In the accompanying drawings,—Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hair cutting device constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clip for detachably connecting the blade to the comb, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the gage blocks which coact with the clip in securing the blade in place.

In accordance with this invention I combine with a comb, a blade for use simultaneously with the comb on one side thereof and a device for detachably securing the blade on one side of the comb.

A suitable comb is indicated at 1, a blade at 2 and the securing device at 3. The comb may be of any suitable construction, an ordinary comb being here shown. The blade 2 is here shown as the blade of a razor, and provided with a tang 4 to which the handle 5a is attached. Any suitable blade may be employed within the scope of my invention and I do not limit myself in this particular. The device 3 for detachably securing the blade on one side of the comb is here shown as a clip comprising a pair of leaves 5, 6 hinged together at their rear or outer ends as at 7, the hinged or pivotally connected portions of said leaves being curved toward each other to provide a space between the said leaves when they are in parallel relation, of sufficient width to enable the said leaves to receive the comb and the tang of the blade between them. The said leaves are connected together at a point a suitable distance from their connecting pivot 7 by means of an adjusting screw 8 which is passed through openings with which they are provided and is provided with a winged nut 9.

On the opposing sides of the leaves of the clip are a pair of gage blocks 10 the opposing sides of which are provided with oblique rabbets 11 forming oblique surfaces to bear against opposite sides of the tang of the blade so as to dispose the blade obliquely with reference to the comb as shown in Fig. 2, and hold the blade in the required relation to the comb to cause the same to cut the hair which extends between the teeth of the comb close to the latter. The said gage blocks are detachable from the leaves of the clip and when placed between one of the leaves and the comb and against the opposite sides of the tang of the blade are clamped in such position, together with the blade and the comb, by the action of the set screw, so as to cause the blade to be securely although detachably fastened to the comb on one side of the latter for use simultaneously therewith in cutting the hair, as will readily be understood.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:—

1. A combined comb and hair cutting device comprising a comb, a clip having a pair of members pivotally connected together, a set screw connecting said members together and a blade, said clip having one of its members bearing on one-side of said comb and said blade being disposed between the comb and the other clip member and detachably connected to the said comb by the action of said set screw.

2. A combined comb and hair cutting device comprising a comb and a gage block on one side thereof, a clip comprising a pair of members hinged together one of said members bearing on the side of the comb opposite said gage block, a blade having its tang bearing on said gage block and thereby disposed on one side of the comb, a gage block on the outer side of the tang of said blade and against the inner side of the other member of the clip and a set screw connecting said clip members together and clamping said comb, gage blocks and blade between them.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

Robert Campbell.
