United States Patent Office.

William S. Tabb, of Chicago, Illinois. Combined Safety-Razor abd Stropper.
No. 902,625. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed July 21, 1908. Serial No. 444,631

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, William S. Tabb, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Safety-Razors and Stroppers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of razors known as safety razors, and the object of the invention is primarily to provide a razor with the necessary and essential requisites for shaving and stropping the blade through the medium of a pair of holders and handle after first withdrawing the guard plates and re-clamping the blade between the holders and handle.

A further object is to combine the, elements so that they can be readily and easily assembled for use or detached at will when necessary to strop the razor.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more in detail described and the asserted novelty specifically claimed.

I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings in which

Figure 1, represents my invention assembled ready for use. Fig. 2, represents a side elevation of the handle and holders showing the latter in an open position for the assembling of the several parts. Fig. 3, represents a plan view showing the holders and handle in a closed position. Fig. 4, represents a plan view of the fingered guard plate. Fig. 5, an edge view of the same, and Fig. 6, represents a plan view of the razor cutting blade, and Fig. 7, a plan view of the upper guard plate.

Referring to the drawings A and A′ designate a pair of razor blade and guard plate holding bars. The bar A is stationary and rigidly secured to one, and the inner end of a handle B by means of rivets b, b, or other suitable fastening means, said bar having screw threaded holes a, c in the inner and free or outer ends thereof. A′ designates a movable holding bar which is pivotally and detachably secured at its rear end to the rear end of the stationary holding bar A by means of a threaded set screw C which is passed through correspondingly threaded holes a and a′, formed in the movable and stationary bars A and A′ respectively, the set screw C forming a fulcrum for the action of the movable bar. The free end of the movable holding bar A′ is provided with a notch b′ within, which takes a threaded set screw C′ passed through a correspondingly threaded hole a in the outer or free end of the stationary bar A.

D designates a rectangular lower guard plate having finger bars d formed upon its edges longitudinally, the ends thereof being provided with lugs or flanges E, E, for a purpose hereinafter explained, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings.

F, designates an upper guard plate having slots f, f, formed in its ends which take the flanges E, E, of the guard plate D.

G, designates a double beveled edged razor blade having slots g, g, formed in its ends which is interposed between the upper and lower guard plates D and F, the slots g, g, in the ends of the blade being for the same purpose as those in the plate F, i.e., allowing for the passage therethrough of the flanges E, E, formed upon the ends of the guard plate G which retains the plate F and blade G snugly in place while shaving.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of my razor will be obvious, but may be briefly rehearsed as follows:—

In assembling the parts the operator locates the razor blade upon the upper surface of the lower guard plate and in turn locates the upper guard plate upon the razor blade, said blade being interposed between the two, the flanges upon the ends of the lower guard plate retaining the several parts of the razor firmly in place. It is then clamped between the holding bars for shaving. The operator when through shaving and when desiring to strop it, places the razor between the clamping or holding bars and strops the same by grasping the handle thereof and stropping in the usual manner.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:—

The combination with a pair of razor holding bars, the lower of which being rigidly secured to the razor handle and having a screw threaded hole formed in the inner and free end thereof, an upper removable bar having a screw threaded hole in rear end which alines with the one in the rear end of the fixed bar, the free end of said immovable bar being provided with a notch in its free end, set screws adapted to unite pivotally and detachably said bars, the set screw in the free end of the fixed bar being adapted to take in the notch in the free end of the movable bar and secure the bars together, of a lower guard plate having a series of fingers formed upon the edges thereof and provided at its ends with vertical flanges, a razor blade having beveled edges and slotted ends, said slotted ends being adapted to receive the flanges of the fingered guard plate and an upper guard plate having slots in its ends also adapted to receive the vertical flanges on the end of the lower guard plate all constructed, arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.

William S. Tabb.
